ANIMALS!

To build up vocabulary... start off with something fun and interesting... words for animals... did the Norsemen know about Kangaroos? Did they Hel! Well, here's the opportunity to speculate on what they might have called them, if they'd seen them.
Some animals are blank... so if anyone can think of ideas for them I'd be grateful.

(Also... obviously I haven't got every animal down there... I've hardly got more than a handful... so please help by adding translations for other animals I couldn't think of)

Newt -

Newt could be snake with legs? ^^

Hmmmm... it could be Sami... but I think a snake with legs would often be assumed to be a dragon. :P
Speaking of dragons... What do people think of the term...

Newt, n. froskormr (m). - Frog-snake / Frog-serpent / Frog-dragon

Or perhaps...

Newt, n. froskdreki (m). - Frog-dragon?

For moth, do you know the Faroese? Heksmaður - witch-man. Did you derive your word, or is that the actual word?


Also, I think using "ormr" for newt is probably a good idea because the word "ormr" always conjures up, for me anyway, the image of an eel or similar watery snakey type thing.

I hadn't heard of that term. :P Heksmaður... but I don't think this could be used for Old Norse...

Heks comes from the Danish, which was borrowed from the German. Mǫlr is a sourced Old Norse word for moth though.
Ormr is definitely more appropriate for a newt... but as Ormr is such a vague term, snake, serpent, worm, dragon, eel etc. It should be modified to have the specific meaning of newt.

It is not false. "Ber" only exists as the first element of the compound "berserkr" or others on the same theme.
Bjǫrn is used throughout Old Norse literature, also runic inscriptions. It features in hundreds of peoples names such as...

Bjǫrnúlfr, Þórbjǫrn, Arinbjǫrn. The list goes on.

Terms in Old Norse such as "hvítbjǫrn" "svartbjǫrn" "snæbjǫrn".

The E in Proto-Germanic "berô" is very prone to what's known as "vowel breaking"... where as it develops into Old Norse
the E changes to a "jǫ".

Evidence:
P.G erþô - jǫrð O.N
P.G feþrô - fjǫðr ON etc.

It is very uncommon for the E to remain as it was... but in some circumstances it can, which probably explains how the "ber" is used for the compound noun.

Also, further evidence is how all languages deriving from Old Norse use bjǫrn cognates, and no "ber" cognates at all.

Danish: bjørn, Swedish: björn, Norwegian Bokmål: bjørn, Norwegian Nynorsk: bjørn, Faroese: bjørn, Icelandic: björn.
